Frequently Asked Questions - Heat Pump Subsidies

What is the Warmer Kiwi Homes Programme?

The Warmer Kiwi Homes Programme is a government initiative that offers grants to help New Zealanders install insulation and energy-efficient heating, such as heat pumps, in their homes. The programme aims to make homes warmer, healthier, and more energy-efficient.

Who is eligible for a heat pump subsidy?

To qualify for a heat pump grant, you must meet the following criteria:

1. Own and live in a home build before 2008.
2. Have ceiling and underfloor insulation that meets EECA standards (if not already installed, this must be completed first).
3. Meet one of these conditions:
  • Hold a community service card or SuperGold Combo Card.
  • Live in a low-income area identified by ECCA.

How much of the Heat Pump cost does the subsidy cover?

The subsidy covers up to 80% of the cost of an approved heat pump, with a maximum heat pump grant of $3,000 (including GST). The remaining cost typically ranges between $400 and $700, depending on the size and brand of the heat pump.

What types of heating are eligible for subsidies?

Only energy-efficient heaters that are approved by ECCA qualify for the subsidy.

These include:

  • Heat pumps
  • Modern wood or pellet burners
  • Flued gas heaters

Please note that homes with an existing operational fixed heater in the main living area may not qualify for this grant.

Can I get a grant for insulation as well as a heat pump?

Yes! If your home doesn’t already have ceiling and underfloor insulation, you’ll need to install these first to qualify for a heat pump subsidy. Grants for insulation are also available through the Warmer Kiwi Homes Programme.

How long does the process take?

From application to installation, the process typically takes 2-4 weeks, depending on demand and the availability of installers in your area.

Can I install a heat pump myself and still get a subsidy?

No, the subsidy is only available when the installation is carried out by an EECA-approved service provider like EnergySmart. This ensures your heat pump is installed safely and meets all programme standards.

Are heat pumps really energy-efficient?

Yes! Heat pumps are one of the most energy-efficient heating solutions available. They use less electricity than traditional heaters while providing consistent warmth and reducing your energy bills.
